The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and the Keating Competition Awards will share one stage, connecting the journalists who shaped this state's media landscape with the students who will define its future.

About the Event

The luncheon brings together Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame inductees and Keating Competition finalists in a single afternoon program that moves between generations and across media.

Inductees’ work represents decades across the spectrum of media, including print, broadcast and digital journalism. They’ll share the spotlight with student journalists from Indiana colleges and universities recognized for their outstanding reporting, photography and multimedia storytelling.

  • Angelo Angelopolous

    The late Angelo Angelopolous was a Butler University graduate and renowned sportswriter for the Indianapolis News. Throughout his career, he specialized in covering Indianapolis 500 races and drivers, including drafting a book about driver Bill Vukovich.

    David Haugh is a former athlete turned longtime sports journalist at the South Bend Tribune and The Chicago Tribune who expanded his work into multimedia. He now is featured on Chicago radio and television broadcasts, as well as print outlets around the country.

    Gerry Lanosga is an award-winning print and broadcast investigative journalist, and associate professor at The Media School at Indiana University. He is a founding member of the Indiana Debate Commission and is a board member of the Indiana Coalition for Open Government.

  • Mary Tandy

    The late Mary Tandy was one of few Black women to operate a weekly metropolitan newspaper. Hired in 1970 as a secretary at the Indiana Herald, she worked her way up to office manager and advertising manager, eventually becoming owner, publisher and editor.

    Sue Morrow is an award-winning visual journalist at top newspapers in the country. In addition to her work, she is active in several photojournalism organizations, including the National News Photographers Association and Catchlight, where she mentors other photographers.

Learn More about the Keating Competition

The competition for Indiana college students pays homage to the late Indy Star journalist Tom Keating, a beloved columnist and Lilly Endowment executive who was especially good at telling the stories of everyday people.

  • Thomas R. Keating was a popular long-time columnist for The Indianapolis Star. Known for his portraits of Hoosiers from all walks of life – from washcloth salesmen to police officers to politicians – Keating wrote five columns per week, and he did it with energy and enthusiasm for 14 years.

    Indianapolis was his hometown, and its stories were the center of his work. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School and attended both Ball State and Indiana universities. A collection of his columns, “Indiana Faces and Other Places,” was published in 1982.

    Keating died in 1985 at the age of 45.

  • The Keating competition is a daylong feature writing competition among the premier journalism students at Indiana colleges and universities. Since its inception, the program has awarded roughly $170,000 in cash prizes. The competition is named for Keating.

    Each year, finalists are sent out to find interesting stories in the heart of Indianapolis. They have five hours from the beginning of the assignment to find subjects, conduct interviews and write their stories on deadline.
